The allure of gem-set watches can be hard to shake. Once you've got the itch, you'll find yourself gravitating to anything and everything shiny. That's why I'm shocked that the incredible kaleidoscope of opaline colors isn't used more often in watchmaking. Let this second story from The New York Times (we do read other link publications, but link credit where credit is due) help you fall in love with the magic of link opal and appreciate the struggle of finding these beautiful gems.

It's quite interesting to see link the link various layers come off as the movement gets stripped down to the mainplate. A selfwinding chronograph is built on several levels. On top you have the rotor and the automatic winding bridge including the reverser wheels which allow the rotor to wind the mainspring link in both directions. The rotor runs in ceramic ball bearings.
