While the two-tone treatment is shocking, it's also reminiscent of a much, much older link Rolex watch and one link never produced at the consumer level: The Deep Sea Special. Yes, the link one with the skyscraper crystal. That watch, too, was two-tone – and featured a very similar bracelet. Sure, it's a stretch (like the Deep Sea's bracelet) to compare these two watches, but the Explorer's origins date back to the same era, so this crossover in design has some tiny level of historical commonality.

A few years link ago I dragged my then-girlfriend to an auction preview at Phillips. Wandering through the rare link watches from the usual suspects link and a less rare delightfully unusual rainbow Daytona my first one I stopped in front of a case with a number of more unusual watches.
