An adverb gives description to a verb, much as an adjective helps describe a noun.
Examples:
Sue ran quickly. VERB: ran (what she did) ADVERB: quickly (how she did it)
Carl made an excellent meal. NOUN: meal (a thing) ADJECTIVE: excellent (what kind of meal)
Other adverb examples:
The saw buzzed noisily. Jim swims well. Donnie shyly gave his speech. Note, an adverb often ends in 'ly'. She sang happily, loudly, and off-key (all tell HOW she sang)
