It does seem that the isolation of N.Korea and their stalwart defiance to march on into the disorder of oblivion is inevitable without great effort to compromise and reorganize. Kim is educated and he inherited his position as the N.Korean god...a position that, whenever challenged by underlings, requires him to execute those who may attempt an unsanctioned path.

12 Million people can self-maintain and progress slowly without much problem so long as the people do not revolt or outside influences invade and destroy the infrastructure. Obviously their dependence on foreign technology is an unsustainable weakness. I doubt Kim would compromise in support of a better defense since signs of agressive invaders are not a notable problem.

A study of how Korea divided and became what they are today is also telling of the potential for a peaceful reunion along similar lines. Marching into oblivion is not necessary.

As late as the 1970's, N. Korea actually had a higher per capita income than the South.
