Can you filter a river, and have the filtered water go into your pipes, and into your house?
When I am older I wanna buy a house near a river. I wanna filter the river, and have the filtered water go into my house. I was wondering if I is illegal to do that?

Could be a very expensive process,read here...http://healthvermont.gov/enviro/water/lake_river.aspx
You would also need to contact the local authority regarding legality.

A,big T/U For you Ted,
Nothing to stop you using rainwater to drink, shower, wash clothes and car. It's probably purer than river water but would still need to be purified.

right, b/c it has pollutants and acid rain in it. But, rain water does have some healing properties in it.
A lot easier to drill a water well. Use sediment filter first, couple carbon filters then ultraviolet light to kill viruses-bacteria. But get your water tested first thing.

it's expensive to get someone to drill in several locations to find well water. My dad had to do that. He finally ended up hiring a well witcher. That guy found water right away using a wish-boned shaped stick of birch. Then, it was 300 ft down ! But, they dug the well anyway. The funny thing is that cottage was right on a large inland lake.
