A friend of mine has a coin collection and when speaking with coin dealers, they have always told him "No matter what you hear, don't clean them at all".  I assume that's if you want to sell them and get full value.

If these are very old coins worth money , you might want to check with a dealer first. Some old things lose value when presented shiny and sparkly!

I think my old mum used to use vinegar.

Put the pennies into a shallow bowl and cover with cider vinegar, shake the bowl until shiny…….

Not sure about silver, but soaking in Coca Cola is meant to work on copper coins to restore the shine.

Coke used to take rust off a chrome bumper too.

When I was 10 or 12, we boiled pennys in Vinegar to restore their shine. You can buy copper polish.
