    I have a MacBook Pro, OSX

    You may have your status on skype set to off line. Go to invisible and you will be able to make the call. Click the cloud next to your name, top right corner of the Skype window. Set your status there.

      Well, GO off line.  Then go back ONline.  That's what I do when I'm having problems with my computer....should work for your SKYPE.
