    49 1/4 + 3 3/8 = The fractions must have the same denominator, so they can be added.  If you change the 1/4 to 2/8, you have 49 2/8 + 3 3/8.  2/8 + 3/8 = 5/8.  49 + 3 = 52.  52 5/8
