Disappearance from tracking could be due to its transponder being stopped deliberately, electrical failure or the plane's disintegration.

Until the plane is found, any answer can only be speculation.

There's some rumors and theories about that some group hi-jacked it and took it somewhere and hid it. The next rumor / theory is that the Russians  hi-jacked it and hid it somewhere, b/c they didn't like the Russian muslims that were on board. And it's kinda hard to find a plane that's lying on the ocean floor , anyway.

Surprisingly, Waltham moved on from Lugrin and Aubert after around a decade. It's possible Meylan's success and his 1888 patent for a new repeater caught Waltham's eye. Maybe it was a question of design link – Meylan's chronographs and repeaters had a simplicity and elegance unlike Lugrin's mess of bridges and levers. link Maybe it was a last gasp to save production of complicated watches that never link really caught on.
