Purchase the operating system from Microsoft. Windows 8 is not an upgrade for Windows 7. Windows 8 is a whole new operating system that is Microsoft's replacement for Windows 7. You will actually want Windows 8.1 as it has the patches for the issues people found with Windows 8. If you have Windows 7 now, keep it. Windows 8 offers no real impressive changes from Windows 7.
