Air trapped in the cavity of the ships hull gives it floatation.

The load the hull of those lake freighters with tons of iron ore and other metals .And the train car ferries that used to go across Lake Michigan were loaded with railroad cars, automobiles , and people. How in the heck did they float ? We used to take those ferries to go to Wisconisin when I was a kid.It was a 4 hour trip across the lake.
ok.Glad you explained it,tommy.Then they have to pump water out of the ballast,don't they , Tommy ? An old,retired merchant marine off the great Lakes told me that.
MCM.In relation to your comment to Prassna.In smaller aluminium boats they actually do use styrofoam in the seats as floatation devices.
