      How old is your son? If he is a minor, you can check his messages right on his phone. If he is an adult, privacy laws prevent you from hijacking his messages.

        With so many phones and service providers, it's hard to know what to do in a situation like yours.  It would behoove you to actually call your carrier (probably 611) or even better, go to one of their stores and explain what you want.
