A rheumatologic illness marked by fevers, malaise, weight loss, muscle pain and stiffness(especially in the shoulders and pelvis),and morning stiffness. It occurs primarily, but exclusively, in the white individuals over 60. The cause of the syndrome is unknown. Although there is no single diagnostic test for this condition, patients usually have a markedly elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate(>50mm/hr) and no evidence of another disease(eg.,infection, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus) as the underlying cause.
