Hard start could be anything. Weak battery, clogged injectors, weak starter, old spark plugs, etc. The over heating issue is quite possible a bad thermostat (the one attached to the water pump) or low antifreeze.

do they still put water in the radiator nowdays, or is that a thing of the past ?

If you meant batteries, they are sealed now. You can not add water.
