No. They are created creatures to make entertaining stories back in the times long before TV and story books. These handed down stories became folklore.

My father was a commercial fisherman.  Whenever he would loose his hat from the wind, he would tell us kids that the mermaids would come up and steal it as a joke...  We were small kids, and were fascinated by the story.  Did not end as a fairy tale, as the life of a fisherman, ruin the marriage and parents divorced when I was in 2 rd. grade.

There has never been any pictures of mermaids, or bones found, or a decomposed mermaid body that washed up on shore.   If you want to see a mermaid, watch the movie  " Splash "    ;-)
