    what would cause sewer gas smell in the basement

    You probably have a drain somewhere. That trap in it has probably dried out . Pour a couple gallons of water in drain. That should stop it .

    sewage causes it. The pipes or the sewers have to be blown out. My mom's house used to have sewer gas occasionally and we would pour bleach down the basement drain. But, it's  just a stop gap measure. That house was built in 1926.
