An elixir is like a potion or tonic with superior healing qualities and I imagine , for many the Salvation Army does help in many ways by offering councelling, prayer, group support, even food, shelter and clothing. In this way it serves as a tonic or elixir for many people.

As an amulet or 'object' that protects its bearer from harm the Salvation Army would appear to accomplish just that in the cases of helping those in need of ongoing resources such as addictions and rehab, homelessness and shelters, soup kitchens and food banks...they refuse/exclude no one.
