When we were kids my aunts and I used to rub them across our face and pretend we were shaving with an electric razor because of the buzzing sound they made.
I have not heard the sound of cicadas in many years. I lived in Texas most of the time when I was knee high to a grasshopper and yes, we called them locusts instead of cicadas.

In order to make sure the bezel didn't inadvertently get knocked manufacturers started to come up with technologies to link "lock" the bezel in place and prevent it from link turning if a locking mechanism wasn't disengaged first. In other link words the bezel-locking mechanism made diving much safer.
