        From what I have read, it is a spasm of the Diaphram muscle which moves the lungs..

          As other answers, it is to do with our digestive system through what we eat and drink, burps, blocked feelings/uncomfortable , indegestion. hiccups  which start off amusing can be painful and a nuisance if they go on for too long.......
