Select "Play Online" (it will be "Xbox Live" for Xbox players) from the "Left 4 Dead" main menu. Although no sign in is required on the PC, Xbox users are prompted to sign in to their Xbox Live accounts if they haven't already.

Select the game mode you wish to play (such as Co-Op, Versus or Survival). Double-click the game lobby you want to join. The lobby is the waiting room that houses players until the game starts. The lobby leader can also change game settings (such as the map and difficulty) from the lobby.

Click the character icon to select your character. Click the "Ready" button and wait for the lobby leader to start the game.
