If you need to overnight it in Venice before departing on your cruise, I recommend you stay in the nearby city of Mestre. There are several great,clean and very reasonably-priced accommodations that are a 15 minute bus or train ride away from Venice. Trains and buses run very regularly and are extremely cheap. One-way train fare is 1 Euro.
I've visited Venice several times and can recommend a great little hotel that I stay at in Mestre. It'll cost you less than 100 Euro per night, VAT (taxes) included and the place is spotless, stylish and run by the friendliest couple you'll ever meet.
