We never really know who we are dealing with across the internet, many people are genuine but some are not. Be careful with what information you share with people, be suspicious of those who ask for personal information.
It is possible to build up online friendships over time, but again, remember you only know what that person chooses to tell you. Problems you encounter could be from simple liars with a need for attention through to those individuals who are dangerous and damaged and may wish you harm.
