Make sure when you take it in that the engine is hot. many failures are because the engine is not at operating temps and that sensors and pollution equipment is not working at potential.
although I don't recommend this, when I get 'smogged' I run it hard and blow it out. I bring it in very hot. I think that if you just drive it on the freeway at freeway safe speed for about 3 or 4 miles and then bring it in, you'll be ok. But, you have a 1998, nothing last forever. good luck.
