Get a test light, and a friend. Have them turn the key while you connect the test light to the body of the car and to the small wire terminal on the starter. If the switch is bad the test light will not light up. If the starter is bad the light will come on and you may hear a click. The click is the first indicator of a bad starter. Also, you can take the test light, again to the body and then touch it to the large terminal on the starter to ensure that you are getting power there as well. That should always have power.
