    is giving a gift common when invited to a commissioning service of an officer?

    I don't know if a gift at the commissioning ceremony would be convenient, but I'm sure it would be appreciated. It's an opportunity to show your support.

    I would give them the movie, “ Master and Commander” for a Navy or Coast Guard comissioner.. But then you didn’t mention the service branch. A movie is a cheap gift for the occasioning. It is prestigious to be a commissioned.
