        that all depends on how thick you would like the mulch to be. 40sq ft. is an area that spands 4 ft buy 10 ft or any other two cumbind figures that eqaul 40. the bags of mulch you buy should have a chart telling you how mutch one bag will cover useing the manufacters specs
