In the U.S. Red fuel is off road or farm fuel its not taxed, there for you cannot run it in over the road trucks or cars. Basically its meant for construction equipment and farm tractors. If they find it in your tank in a diesel pickup of any truck or car for that matter there's a heft fine involved.

Most oil companies offer just one grade of Gas Oil, or red diesel, which meets Class A2 and Class D and is suitable for both diesel engine and furnace applications.......

I think it was a low-octane fuel introduced after the war. I can remember cars having to go up hills in reverse as there was not enough power to allow them to go up forward.

yes i remeber those days,I had a Rolls Canhardly,It would roll down the hills,But could hardley get up them,
Hec, the reason for going up hills in reverse was because the reverse gear is lower than first gear, at least it was in those days.
Yes i know nomdeplume,In the Army abroard ,some our lorry had to take the hills in reverse gear,But i thought the Red petrol was for when it was rationed,and to stop it being ,half inched by the general public,
