Why do you think most cities do not allow chickens to be kept in backyards?

Many do not realize that the public health laws were formulated due to some disease experiences, relating to livestock living closely to people.  Are they allowed in your city?

By having a chicken coop, or free range of the backyard is an open invitation for mice and rats, any one who have chooks can confirm this, no matter how clean you keep the coop, they will always be there, fortuneately in Oz we don't have the worry of Rabies or any other exoctic diseases associated with birds and animals.

You can't keep any barnyard animals in the city. They make a lot of noise, and they make a mess. They could be rabid, or promote some other disease.

I agree with the noise, and mess, they may even attract rats. They will not, as birds, get rabies, as that is only a mammal disease. There are zoonotic diseases between man and chicken however.
Their feed attracts rodents, they are disease carriers, some cities allow you to keep hens, but not roosters, many cities only require permits and/or have a limit on how many you can have.
Your best bet would be to visit your code enforcement website or back yard chickens. If everyone had chickens the poultry industry wouldn't be happy. Sometimes the truth of it all is that it just comes down to money. Who has more the giant chicken farmer who pays into campaign funds for the politicians or you.

Good luck with this, check out backyard chickens website.

One cannot by the way, raise eggs as cheaply as they can be bought, so those thinking that they are saving money are not. The eggs will be fresher however. I do not want to raise them, but awareness as to why they should not be raised in cities...

I agree bustieone, also many back yard "farmers" sell eggs not being aware that second hand cartons are open to contamination from previous use

Because if they get out and try to "cross the road" they could create traffic jams.
