My mother worked. There were 5 children at home, the oldest perfectly capable for keeping the others on tract. She was bossy, still is, I'm glad I'm grown......

If it's economically feasable. If not, someone "competent" should watch the children.

They should if they want to and can afford it. My father worked 2 jobs when he had to so my mother could stay home and look after 8 children. I've noticed that not many men like to work 2 jobs to support the family if the wife wants to stay home and raise the kid/s. Many of the men I know expect the wife to work too in order to help support the family. They tell me that women fought for equal rights so they should work too because that's equal. What these men fail to realize is that women's pay is still significantly less than a man's pay because the law still views the man as the provider for the family. Typically most of the woman's pay goes towards paying for the daycare. This based on what I've been told in discussions with the people I know where both parents work.
