Is it safe to install Windows Media Player software and Quicktime (for Itunes) on the same computer?

I have itunes on a pc. people keep sending me windows media files to play. I heard that if you play windows media files on a computer that has itunes installed, the two programs mess eachother up. Is that right?

I have both installed and use one or the other just fine,,,never had a problem with them attempting to interact.
