You also get a monkey like Pokemon, that will beat your rival, when you get to first city with gym. If you pick grass, the monkey will be water, to beat you strongest rival's best pokemon, water.

Since you have two games you can also start one with one starter, and start the other game with another. Then trade that starter over. Erase the game without the starter. Choose the other starter, none of you have, and trade that over. Erase the game, and play with Snivy the best starter. When the player with all 3 starters gets to the Daycare Center, he can make eggs and trade them to you for weak nothing pokemon, and everyone wins.
