The volatile molecules of the chemicals producing the odor remain in the atmosphere until they dissipate.  In the case of an on-going offense, like the rotting of garbage, meat, bodies, etc. this may not dissipate as quickly as the odor is being emitted, thus it remains.  Spraying of pleasing chemicals which are also volatile can mask the odor, and make it less offensive.  Bathroom or room deodorizer sprays do just that.  Striking a match actually causes combustion of these chemical odors, and they are removed by burning.  The smell of the match and sulfur are as a normal match odor.
