The E-1 code is an indication that the motor is encountering some interference or resistence when trying to maneuver. It is either a blockage in the piston/seal pack within the valve body and/or a microswitch not opening causing the drive piston to stop in position. This may be more work than you want to handle. I would suggest calling your local Culligan dealer for service. Your manual will have an exploded view of the head assembly if you wish to attempt cleaning this yourself.
