Recently planted sugar maples, 15' high, developing a moss growth on the main trunk, whats wrong ?

Am in the mid Ontario area, do have a high water table and am about to drain the area. Is this moss due to the trees standing in water, planted 6 months ago

If the moss is on the North side of the trees it is completely normal.  If the moss is on the trunks and also on the ground, it is indicative of a wet ground condition.  Since maple are shallow rooted and grow in wet areas, I would not be concerned.  Are they in standing water, and if so, for short periods of time, such as after a downpour?  If this is the case, do not worry.  Good luck.
