As Tommyh says, most older vehicles had a dip stick at the side of the gearbox housing, modern vehicles don't.

Thank you for answering. I know where the dip stick is but; do I check the transmission fluid when the truck is cold or after it's been driven for awhile? Do I check it while it's running or when it is off?

I think as with engine oil, it's best to check when it's cold, I beleive you get a better value of how much oil is in the gear box and engine, after the vehice has been standing for a while.

You may not be able to.Some modern transmissions don't have a dip stick. All you can do is check under the car for leaks. If there is no sign of red fluid you are OK.You will eventually need to take it to a dealership or workshop for a service.
