upto 26-- It's not the operating system, it's the hard drive. You need to do this before XP starts up so it can sort them out. The Windows partition will always be 'C'-- "A" will be designated for a floppy-drive.. (obsolete) after this, the drives will be automatically identified by the alpha designation D~Z. Depending on how large your drive is. Partitioning is really a good idea to store items, if windows becomes corrupt or your drive crashes you may be able to place it into slave mode and install a new drive and transfer data from a partition to your new drive. (assuming your old drive will start up..)
