1 'tonne' or 'metric ton' is equal to 1000 kilograms. It is may also be referred to as simply a 'ton' (identical pronunciation).
However, a 'short ton' may just be referred to as a 'ton' in the US and is equal to 2000 lbs, or 907.18474 kg.
In addition, a 'long ton,' or 'Imperial ton,' which has largely been replaced by the metric ton, refers to a unit of 2240 lbs (1 016.04691 kg).
It was the standard in the Imperial (British) system. It should be noted that Britain has officially adopted the metric system, but the Imperial system is still often used for some things.
So if you say a "ton" in Britain, you would be most likely referring to a metric ton.
