Sounds like an issue with the linkage. It could be broken or out of alignment. If it's external you may be able to fix it. Get under the vehicle and look at the top of the tranny, have someone in the vehicle depress the clutch (making sure the e-brake is on and they have a foot on the brake too and the vehicle is NOT running) and try to put the shifter in reverse. You should see if the linkage moves. If it doesn't move, look for what may be keeping it out of alignment it could be something as simple as a missing bolt. If everything on the outside looks OK, then it's an internal problem and you will need a tranny shop for that.
