Vermiculite is a mineral. The reason for which people use vermiculite in gardening is due to its high moisture retaining nature. you can use vermiculite in a mix with any soil, however it is mostly mixed with perlite in a 50:50 proportion first, and then amixed with soil. Perlite is a mined material which doesn't retain moisture, so mixing it with vermiculite means your plant's roots will get enough oxygen, and the vermiculite wont absorb too much water and nutrients to itself.
Vermiculite is somtimes used as a soil conditioner It can be used to cover seeds in starting trays or you can use it to start Cuttings of plants poinsetas are somtimes started this way the stems are diped in a rooting hormone first and set in vermiculite.
