        I wonder what animal was the model for his first appliance for this surgery?  Probably a dog.  Anyway, it is a remarkable invention, as it saves lives and allows people to resume life, with a functional quality.

          Probably Sir William Arbuthnot-Lane. He also did operations to correct cleft-palate. I once treated a lady who had this operation by him so that shows my age !


          It is said the only reason he never had a colostomy himself was because he was the only surgeon capable of doing it.

            No, I was a dentist, I made the lady an obturator to fill the cleft palate, so Lane's op was not a success.
