I have XP and used DOS five minutes ago to do a simple task of duplicating a floppy drive a friend needs. The DOS command was;
discopy A: A:
And to make sure the right files were in the floppy I used the DOS command:
DIR/W (all the files came up showing size etc)
All you have to do is click START, PROGRAMS, then ACCESSORIES and the sixth one down says "COMMAND PROMPT"
If, by chance you do not see this, then go to START, and SEARCH.
Just type in "command prompt" and hit SEARCH. Wait a few moments while the search goes on. It will come up in the screen and you will just have to double click it and C:/ prompt or DOS will come up.

The only problem is you are refering to entering dos from a running system. mine will not open so i need the key strokes to enter dos at the point of start up before the desktop opens
Try this guy ronj .. Sorry I couldn't help you .. If you do a google search type in dos won't open it gives you lts of troubleshooting. Good luck, if you get stuck just post under here again and I will do another search for you
