Have your vet check him

He could have a bad tooth or ear infection.

My dog always smelled like a dog...but she had a lot of fur and was very fond of rolling in the stinkiest stuff...even though she wasn't much of a hunter.  I had her shaved and then she smelled better (whatever she had gotten into stuck in her fur and no doggy shampoo could get the smell out.

What's he eating? It could be the food he gets and the odor is permeating through his skin. The same goes if he is on meds of any kind.

If it's not just a doggy smell and not very pleasent, then it sound like it may need a check over by the vet, it may be something which needs treatment.

Because he's a dog, not a fluffy pull toy.  What smells to you is heaven's scent to a dog.

maybe it's something that exudes thru his pores . What does he smell like .......skunk ? poop ?  uriney smell?  doggy bad breath ? doggy vomit ?
