why would my lab (dog) smell bad even after bathing??

Have your vet check him

He could have a bad tooth or ear infection.

My dog always smelled like a dog...but she had a lot of fur and was very fond of rolling in the stinkiest stuff...even though she wasn't much of a hunter. I had her shaved and then she smelled better (whatever she had gotten into stuck in her fur and no doggy shampoo could get the smell out.

back in the 70s, my g.friend's cocker spaniel would roll in squirrel poop, and other dog's poop. She was always bathing her.

Goose poop smells for days as does swan poop- regardless of doggy shampoos. "Silly Dog" as I used to say....I never cared how she smelled- she was my baby dog!

What's he eating? It could be the food he gets and the odor is permeating through his skin. The same goes if he is on meds of any kind.

If it's not just a doggy smell and not very pleasent, then it sound like it may need a check over by the vet, it may be something which needs treatment.
