You reduce a relationship from "friend" to "acquaintance" by NOT doing the things you do when you are nurturing a friendship.
Don't call the person or accept invitations for the two of you to get together.
At a social gathering, merely nod at the person instead of sharing conversation or sitting together.
As you push the friend further out of the picture (s)he will get the hint.
