Even though I inherited debts that were nearly equal in value to the estate, by refusing to participate as an inheritor my credit lines remained unaffected. I purchased the memorabilia from the mortgage company in exchange for the remaining estate. Refusal to inherit may not be a universal option, but it can save the inheritor a stack where it is an option. Discuss your options with a lawyer.
