    how fast did a 1899 steam train go?

    Well in back to the future, the steam locomotive had to push the delorean 88 mph.. :)

    Seriously though I think at by 1900 probably top speed was around 60~75 max,(depending of course on the load pull and grade) not that they couldn't go faster but keeping them on the tracks i think would have been a serious problem
    Yes back then the speed wasn't the great, like Vinny said 60-75 MPH maybe, Alot because of the track conditions. But in 1941 Norfolk and Western made the J class that had a top speed of 140 MPH
