    Probably because the cars were made during the golden age of the American car industry. After 71 the quality of American cars began to decline due to the EPA restrictions and other factors.

    In 1957 there were many famous designs of cars, there is a long list. Back then cars were built to last a lifetime. Good question, thumbs up to you.
    Things were built to last in those days, as opposed to today!
