    Things You'll Need
    Screwdriver
Sockets including a spark plug socket
    Socket wrench with extension
    Anti-seize lubricant
    New spark plug
    Tension tester tool

    Instructions

    1
Gain access to the spark plugs and spark plug wires. In a 2.4 liter engine, remove the ignition coil and module assembly from the top of the engine to gain access. In this Alero model's engine, the spark plugs run down the center of the engine. In a 3.1 liter engine, remove the air cleaner to gain access. The spark plugs are located next to the engine oil reservoir. For a 3.4 liter engine, remove the windshield wiper module cover and rotate the engine for service access. For a 2.2 liter engine, the spark plug wires are located across the top of the engine and require no components to be removed for access to the spark plugs.

    2
Squeeze the spark plug wire boot and turn the wire from side to side to release the lock on the spark plug. Pull back on the wire by the boot to remove the wire from the spark plug.

    3
Unscrew the spark plug from the cylinder well.

    4
Apply a generous coat of anti-seize compound to the new spark plug's threads.

    5
Thread the new spark plug into the cylinder well. If resistance is met, back the spark plug out of the well and start again. Do not force the spark plug into the well.

    6
Test the tension on the spark plug. Find the appropriate tension on the package the spark plug came in. The tension ranges between 10 and 15 foot pounds.

    7
Place the spark plug wire over the end of the spark plug. Turn one quarter turn in each direction to lock the spark plug wire into place. Continue this process with the remaining spark plugs. Completely finish one spark plug before moving to the next.

    8
Replace any components removed in Step 1.
