How did the band Slade get their name

Slade started out as The Ventures then became the 'N Betweens. The name Ambrose Slade was introduced from the beginning of 1969 and was apparently coined by Fontana's Jack Baverstock (Fontana was a record label). According to Jimmy Lea the name was a product of Jack's secretary christening her various possessions with names. Her handbag was Ambrose and her bag was Slade so Jack took the two names and created the new group.

When Chas Chandler took over management of the group they shortened their name to Slade.
