If not a car mechanic, the way to check a car is to go to one. By having a proffesional mechanic checking one's can, one makes sure no damage is done to his/her car, which can be caused if someone who is not a proffesional does that, and that indeed the car is checked properly, because if it doesn't car dangerous accidents may occur. A professional mechanic had learned and is licenced to repair cars and to use the adequat equipment, and knows what is a good condition of parts in cars and what is not.
Of coure, not all car mechanics are good ones, and when looking for a mechanic, one should select a good mechanic (by recommendations or personal impression).
